On Friday 20th September 2019, the 9th edition of the GreenPak’s Nirricikla Ghall-Istrina campaign has been launched in the presence of the President of Malta, Dr George Vella, and in collaboration with the Ministry for Sustainable Development, Environment & Climate Change.
Thanks to this campaign tonnes of plastic caps are collected each year so that they are recycled and in return a donation is given to the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation during L-Istrina.
For the purpose of this campaign, only plastic caps such as caps from water bottles, soft drinks, juices and jerry cans, as also plastic caps that do not have foil or cardboard underneath the cap are collected.
Last year over 55 tonnes of plastic caps have been collected through this initiative, and a donation of €21,000 was given to the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation. 132 schools, 19 Local Councils, 42 companies, businesses, clubs, restaurants, bars & entities participated in this campaign.
The general public is becoming more aware about the need to recycle plastic, and thanks to this campaign, awareness increased.
GreenPak’s CEO Ing. Mario Schembri said: “Thanks to this campaign we are helping out families in need, and at the same time, whilst recycling these plastic caps, we are diverting them from being thrown out irresponsibly, thus care of the environment.”
The Minister for Sustainable Development, Environment & Climate Change, Dr Jose’ Herrera, said: “This campaign will again help the ministry in spreading the message and encouraging the public to recycle plastic. I encourage everyone to participate in such a benevolent campaign”.
During his speech, President Dr. George Vella said that this campaign has two main goals. “The first goal is environmental, as we have to eliminate single-use plastic, whilst the second goal is welfare, as the MCCFF has to assist those that seek help”.
